Decisions, Decisions, Decisions, Decisions and Waterers

Updated: Dec 7, 2022

So it was time, this was the year that we were going to get water and electric to the barn. We had to for the sake of Emily's sanity. The first year we had the girls we just had the four cows, no calves at that time. We had three hoses hooked up and over the hill down to four rubber maid troughs, then when winter came it was a challenge with freezing ice. Then came last year with yet again freezing hoses, and extension cords, heaters. Ugh what can we say it was a logistics nightmare, but you will do anything for your girls.

So I was super excited to start this project, since we didn't do a vacation this year do to all this sickness, and Zach having to have surgery. We took those funds we set aside to buy the electrical wire and man let me tell you it got expensive. We bought our direct bury wife from West Virginia Electric Jackson, Ohio. We were able to get the best value and most for our money. But the most important thing in my book was what were we going to do about waterer? Needless to say there are a ton of options out there on the market, so it made the decision extremely hard to make. Then you add in the fact our cattle have horns, so we had that to take into consideration as well. We had it narrowed down to two different watering systems one was the Ritchie Omni 2 and the other was a Water spring with Valley Vet Supply.

We couldn't decided between the two, one was a few hundred more then the other, especially having to buy the insulated tube. But when we went to facebook, posted and asked other folks what they were using, it came down to " you get what you pay for '. We decided on the Ritchie Omni 2. We purchased ours through : Duncan's Family Farm Store

They ship all over the US and they offered free shipping regardless the weight. I even got lucky and caught it on SALE !!!!!!! So in my book it was meant to be, and I was super happy.

But please don't be like me order the waterer and forget that you need the insulated tube that goes with the waterer, that also helps make it fully insulated and works. Ya three days later, me hoping back on there to order that sucker. Inserting link for that now :)

But you make ask other than the reason " you get what you pay for", what were the other deciding factors that lead to us making this our final decision?.

  1. "The stainless steel trough features thermostatically controlled heat elements that are attached to the underside for frost free service even under the most severe winter conditions. The Omni 2’s single trough has a fast refill valve providing fresh water for up to 40 head of cattle or horses." -Ritchie

  2. They are Made in USA.

  3. Warranty

  4. Reviews across any webpage were glowing about customer service and if you had any issues on how they were quick to respond.

  5. Personal recommendations, not one person said that we wouldn't regret the decision, that it would be the best decision , but also a great invest into the farm.

  6. Less time worrying about if they have fresh water

  7. Most importantly to us no more frozen water hoses !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay so we got everything in, then it was decision time on where to put said waterer, needless to say we have only changed were we wanted this to go like half a dozen times. So this was go time ! We have to make a DECISION, and Zach will say that is not Emily strong suit. Finally after walking the coral system, discussing everything we plan to do in the near future, we finally pick the perfect spot. Then comes the next part digging. But more on that next time, when I talk about the water, electric and massive digging project we get into right before a massive rain storm.

Hope you find this super helpful and maybe help make a final decision on what you want to buy on a watering system for what ever type of livestock you have.
